It's all a holdover from when marriages were literally life or death as a bad marriage could destroy an entire famiiles future. The older generations were traumatized by the world they lived in to never do anything "socially questionable" as you're whole family would then be ostracized and unable to survive back when everyone relied on each other for help to weather tragedies, get food etc.
