First off, I LOVE THIS COVER!!! I want a print of it to hang on my wall! Seriously!
Okay, sorry, to the topic at hand. The book. Right.
This book took me back to that happy place all childhood bookworms inhabited for hours on end. It’s filled with adventure, mystery, adorable characters, a cute love story, escape attempts and even some hints of magic. It’s walks that fine line of being a children’s book that adults can enjoy, much like the classic Disney movies. It takes you back to a time when you weren’t stuck in adult brain, and yes, sure the squirrels and horses talk, but like, why wouldn’t they? How else would they tell their story?
The basic plot is Mark (aka Micklang, there’s a reason for the name change) and his lovely furever wife Harriett are two squirrels madly in love. Mark goes foraging a little too close to humans and gets in trouble, separating the two which sets the stage for a series of escape attempts, some foreshadowing of magical curses, and an unexpected turn of events for Harriett. During all these adventures we’re introduced to several fun characters who play pivotal roles in the lives of our separated lovers.
One of the things I appreciated about the book is how the language is not simplified for kids, even though it is a book written for younger audiences. This is a perfect read for a child with more advanced reading skills, or for a parent who wants to read with their child and introduce them to more advanced vocabulary. The language is one thing that makes it fun for us older folks to read, (that and the larger font. If your eyes are a bit more tired than they used to be, they’ll appreciate the break.)
On a side note, if you, like me, ever pondered the idea of squirrels tossing things at humans to get us out of their homes, or as I called it, the Squirrel Mafia, you will appreciate several scenes in here. Trust me.
I would say if you’re in need of a low-stakes read, or looking for a fun book as a gift for a voracious younger read, this book will fit both needs perfectly.
Check it out, and enjoy!
